GO Plumbing: further information
Right When You Need It.
Plumbing emergencies are unique because almost every job a plumber encounters is different. Even something as straightforward as installing a sink can vary from one property to another, despite using many of the same basic materials. Repairs can be just as varied. Over time, faults can develop in different ways depending on how a homeowner or tenant uses their plumbing. Most problems tend to occur in three key areas: the kitchen, bathroom and toilet.
Addressing these issues effectively often comes down to a plumber’s experience, knowledge and ability to adapt. While basic plumbing knowledge can certainly be gained through training, practical experience is what helps a plumber understand how to deal with the unexpected. Training can teach a novice how plumbing systems work and what can potentially go wrong. In reality, however, everyday use, wear and sometimes misuse can cause components to fail in ways that are not always easy to predict.
I once encountered a particularly unusual example. A household had tried to save money by installing an electric shower over their bath rather than using the existing mixer tap. Unfortunately, the electric shower had been connected incorrectly to the mixer tap, which was then left switched on continuously. Because the cold-water pressure was stronger than the hot-water pressure, water began flowing in reverse into the brand-new combi boiler, eventually damaging its flow valve.
Â
The boiler was relatively new and still under warranty, so the owner contacted the manufacturer. However, the engineers could not identify the underlying cause of the problem. The flow valve was replaced several times, but the same issue kept returning because nobody was aware of what was happening with the plumbing next door.
Â
It was only by chance, when I was called out to replace the electric shower, that we discovered the real cause of the problem. This is a good example of why it is important to be cautious about unqualified work, incorrect installations and repairs that may have been carried out without fully understanding the wider plumbing system.
Â
My advice to you as a consumer is simple: ask questions. If you are unsure about an answer, don’t be afraid to ask for clarification. Make sure you understand what work is being carried out, which materials are being used and why they are necessary. Most importantly, make sure you are comfortable that you are receiving a fair price and that the workmanship is of a good standard.
Â
A good plumber should be happy to explain the problem and the proposed solution clearly and straightforwardly. After all, good communication, experience and quality workmanship are just as important as fixing the immediate problem.
